What Should You Do If There Is Ice on Your Air Conditioner Unit?

It can seem unusual that evaporator coils can become frozen when the current temperature is 95 degrees or higher, but a frozen coil is a frequent issue during the hot summer season. There are several potential causes of a frozen evaporator coil.

One prevailing cause is when restricted air passes over the coil, forcing the temperature to slip under 32 degrees. The humidity on the coil freezes, and then you end up with a damaged or completely defective air conditioner unit.

Frozen coils may also be a result of low refrigerant or Freon, or a used filter. You can perform a visual inspection of the filter to learn whether it may be the source of the problem. If the filter is dirty, then it might be affecting air flow; if it is wet, then water is collecting on the coil and missing the drain pan.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU HAVE A FROZEN EVAPORATOR COIL?

Turn off the AC and reach out to Precision Heating & Air at 919-404-7174 to arrange an appointment with a specialist!

Though the prospect of switching off your AC in the middle of a heat wave can be daunting, it might ultimately spare the evaporator coil. It might take as long as eight hours for the coil to thaw out, so the faster the system is switched off, the sooner the problem can be fixed. The fan can and should be kept on to encourage airflow. This also keeps your home as cool as possible, and speeds up the defrosting process. As the coil thaws, condensation will be created, so towels come in handy to soak up the water and avoid damage.

If you believe your system’s evaporator coil is frozen, call Precision Heating & Air at 919-404-7174 to schedule an appointment. We will direct a technician to check the unit as soon as possible.
